the plates are called shock plates...for police, they are placed in pockets that cover the chest and back area...it is meant to protect the area around the heart...they can stop a rifle round although just the impact could stop your heart anyway...it’s like getting hit in the chest with a sledge hammer...
the military and swat teams use more plates and larger vests...although judging from the recent picture posted, the military vests look to have gotten a bit smaller...i guess they decided they needed a little more scarecrow and less tin man...about time...
the police could use the military vests (and i think you will see them go that way) but for now, the powers that be want their police to look like friendly public servants...not an occupation force...
if there are enough cops killed, that kind of mind set will change...it’s just going to take more dead cops first..
but yes, kevlar will stop most handgun rounds...and i believe the military has great use for them..the ones that need the most protection are the soldiers who are going out to engage the enemy in combat...
