You will also need to open an account on an exchange that deals with STELLAR, Bittrex is a good place to start.

If you use your passport and take a good clear picture the process is much faster than Coinbase.
Think less than 30 min start to finish.

Dont forget to use 2FA and save your keys if you do. Google authenticator app is good for this.

Coinbase and Bittrex are both US based companies, and both have good reputations regarding security.

Once you have both accounts open, buy Bitcoin (BTC) using https://pro.coinbase.com/ (same access as coinbase) if you buy as a maker there are no fees. Then simply transfer the BCN you purchased to your bitcoin wallet on Bittrex. From the Bittrex exchange buy Steller.
