Affirmative Action

"Affirmative Action began as a plan to equalize the educational, employment, and contracting opportunities for minorities and women with opportunities given to their white, male counterparts. The policy was born of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson’s executive order 11246, and the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. In its 40-year (now 60 year history) history, Affirmative Action has attempted to rid America of discrimination against minorities and women, sometimes at the cost of what has been labeled “reverse discrimination" towards white men. Such race-conscious Affirmative Action programs have been the source of much controversy and sometimes violent protests. "

My opinion is this; it has been over 2 generations or 64 years since affirmative action programs were initiated. If we can not move on to a merit based system by now, the program becomes a crutch that removes incentive to achieve and the will to compete. It must also be recognized as having failed in its objective. Discrimination against those, that have the qualities to do the job, for reasons of Race, Religion or Gender, is against the law. To continue to promote or favor those with lower skill sets, based simply on ethnic background is simply reverse discrimination. It discourages some to achieve at their potential level, because a sense of "what's the use" is created, as well as a sense of "I don't need to" in others.
