This is a moronic statement.

Yes, perhaps, but the purpose of tariffs is to raise the prices of imports and make domestic production competitive. Whether you end up paying the tariffs or buying American the bottom line is you're paying more.

There's an argument that's made, that producing here will create jobs and push wages up, so we'll be able to afford the higher prices. This is a lie, plain and simple. The mills will largely be automated, and the few jobs they do provide will not pay well. They'll locate in right-to-work states... They'll extort tax concessions from the local governments... They'll dump their waste, having first purchased and then destroyed the EPA and any local officials. And in the end, the only thing left will be profits for the few and higher prices for everyone else.

We've abdicated our position in the world order we created, and are well on our way to becoming irrelevant.
