I looked it up and indeed he was convicted on three felony counts, but Daddy Bush pardoned him or something to get them vacated, but he did have his concealed carry permit revoked. So for a time he could not own a gun, until he got the right back on a technicality. And you know much conservatives love to see people get out of felonies on a technicality. (They make exceptions for conservative gun runners)
Interestingly, one other NRA president also was technically ineligible to own a gun. When Charleton Heston was in full Alzheimer's, that made him ineligible to possess a gun also.
