The right thing was probably to follow FBI guidelines and precedents about commenting on an ongoing investigation, particularly during a presidential campaign. He is not the first FBI chief to face such an issue. (had such a thing happened during the 1972 election, nixon probably would not have been re-elected)

The idea that he thought he was being coy because he thought he knew hillary would win just tells me he was coloring outside the lines, and should have disclosed the trump investigation in the idea of fairness. Or best off, kept his yap shut and stepped out of the spotlight.

He has long arms, so he is patting himself on the back pretty hard, and while I agree with his trashing of trump, that is a dim consolation for having handed the presidency to a guy whose values he says he dislikes.
