Range leaders said they felt confident that Senator Tina Smith would help pass a land exchange bill that is key to the PolyMet project. Smith met with labor, community, and mining officials on Friday in Mt. Iron. They expressed their disappointment with the bill not being included in the omnibus spending bill that was recently passed.
"While there is always concern when you don't see action, it's important to stand united and be engaged in the process," Dave Lislegard said. He's the mayor of Aurora and the president of RAMS.
After the meeting, Smith met with the media. She said, "I was disappointed too I worked hard on this, and so did a lot of other people. But we are going to get this done. It's good for the people of Minnesota."
Congressman Rick Nolan got the bill passed in November in the House. Smith said it can pass a variety of ways in the Senate.
The exchange itself was approved under the Obama administration. The Superior National Forest will receive nearly 7,000 acres, which has more access for the public. In return, PolyMet will receive about 6600 acres they need near their ore body in Babbitt.
Environmental groups have filed four lawsuits to stop the exchange. The bill would put an end to those, and finalize the exchange. However, it would not authorize any mining.
Senator Amy Klobuchar said in a statement, "I have long supported Congressman Nolan's land exchange bill and I am working with him to get it signed into law."
