From the RSV paper you cited:

…apoptotic death of infected cells is a mechanism for reducing virus replication.

Certainly true, but the question is whether apoptosis is the most desirable way to reduce viral replication… or whether apoptosis is overkill (pun intended).

I would think an excessive amount of apoptosis might trigger some problems of its own, apart from the underlying RSV infection.
