Their comeback has been phenomenal. Extirpated for 100 years, now they are coming back on their own here in spite of being shot on sight by most ranchers. No one knows how many get shot but the sightings are increasingly abundant. (The practice of Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up is followed, since it is totally illegal to shoot them)

Funny thing is, not a single rancher here has lost any livestock. The sheepherders all have Great Pyrenees dogs who are not intimidated by wolves, particularly if the shepherd has two or three working dogs.

I attribute it to California's curious deer management practice of allowing bucks only to be shot, so their are herds and herds of does with no fear of humans, the average alfalfa field here has a herd of deer on it every day. The wolves will manage the herd just fine... easy pickings, for now anyway. I think they are as adaptable as coyotes.
