wbmw - When a company runs into problems because they have pointers among thousands of lines of code that don't translate very well into 64-bit, they won't have AMD on the other side of the tech support line.

That is very true. And you know, who is gonna be on the other end of the line? Yep, you guessed it, it's Intel smile

While AMD64 can run 32-bit code just fine, IA64 needs fully recompiled code to get the full speed. So, once somebody goes to IA64, adding AMD64 is really straightforward. Is not it a wonderful setup?

But if they were developing for multithreading, they'd have the tools and support from Intel.

Tools are good, yet they bring little to the table. To add SMP one still has to think a lot about how to restructure the program, and that is where the tools are useless.
