Well, how is a dual core CPU supposed to help programmers running into 32-bit memory limitations?

Not at all. Intel claims there is not much limitation anytime soon.

It is important to understand that more of the same (raw power in 32 bits) does not cut it anymore. At least in the cutting edge areas.

I beg to differ. But that is irrelevant. Dual core CPUs will produce the better benchmark results, that is the crucial point.

new stuff like iHT and multi- core CPUs require application rewrites

Not rewrites. I would guess to go over your software to take advantage of SMP is about the same effort as going over it to take full advantage of AMD-64-capabilities. Intel already initiated software to be ready for SMP by means of Hyperthreading, so a lot of software will be ready to take advantage of SMP next year.

Even MS loves AMD64 because it is so damn convenient to work with and allows to run any of the old stuff for as long as needed

Dual-Core CPUs will as well run the old stuff as long as needed(without taking advantage of it) as AMD-64. Look at Hyperthreading: We have seen exactly the same pattern as for AMD-64. Some applications benefit, some not, some are running even slower.
