kpf - the product then will have to compete against K9 - and a couple-year-old marketbase of AMD-64.

Your statement implies that the marketbase for AMD64 will be significant, and I disagree. AMD does not have the financial resources nor the market share to garner enough commitments from software developers to make it so.

Most software companies are interested in making money and profits, and will ensure that their software is compatible with the widest possible market. The only other alternative is for the chipmaker to spend the money to subsidize new software development. On both counts, AMD doesn't have what it takes to make it happen. As a result, AMD64 software will creep along slowly as did 3DNow.
