A bit off topic...
People reading this forum may become concerned that a Google subsidiary, and by extension Google itself, could be a competitor to Titan if the subsidiary is working with J&J on their own multi-port platform.
Of course, this could cause fear due to the brand recognition of Google.
My question is if anyone has even the slightest hint of the possible augmentations or new capabilities that Verb/J&J are trying to implement into surgery? What is this revolutionary software? What COULD it even be that would put it far beyond what we have in play now?
Didn't Transenterix take a stab at creating a new multi-port robot with new software? Now, Transenterix is no Google, but barring some really poor leadership in Senhances' development, I believe they should of had far more success in selling Senhance just by the fact that they were introducing something that had technology 15 years newer (haptic feedback, eye tracking, etc) than Da Vinci. Senhance does push the envelope of multi-port robotics but it is a commercial failure because it doesn't push the envelope enough. This was evidenced by the fact that the FDA concluded Senhance is just as effective as Da Vinci.
So if J&J/Verb are going to try to do what Transenterix failed at, they are going to have to come out with something that either revolutionizes multi-port, or something that can be purchased for a far lower price than Da Vinci. In my opinon, if this was possible then Transenterix would of done it. But it looks like the only thing Transenterix could think to add was some gimmick features and nobody was sold. So were the developers at Transenterix just too dumb? Or, is it that multi-port today is about as good as it can be?
The meat and potatoes of these consoles seems to be their mechanical engineering and not their software engineering.
The bottom line of what I'm saying is that if it turns out that Verb isn't our partner, then I'm not worried. The next nearest threat to the multi-port Da Vinci will be SPORT. Verb/J&J might come out with something revolutionary but it seems they are years away from being a contender. Even then, will their multi-port console set out to compete with a single-port console? Or, will it just seek to displace the reigning Da Vinci? Single-port, in my opinion, is here to stay and I see Titan Medical's console as dominating that soon-to-be market for quite a while.
