It made a positive difference for me, too. I did the Sierra download last summer, and then the High Sierra upgrade about a month ago.

Both were mildly traumatizing, because on my 2011 Mac, they took longer--much longer--than the progress bar suggested they would. And my machine emitted some alarming noises along the way. But I forced myself to resist the urge to press any keys, and in the end all was well.
