As GOP Tax Plan Faces Senate Vote, Critics Say Bill Would Give Hundreds of Billions to Top 1 Percent

Republicans are rapidly pushing forward with their efforts to pass President Donald Trump’s tax plan, which would overhaul the tax code in order to shower billions of dollars in tax cuts upon the richest Americans, including Trump’s own family. On Tuesday, the Senate Budget Committee passed the Senate version of the plan, with all Republicans on the panel voting for it and all Democrats voting against. Protesters disrupted the committee hearing Tuesday with chants of “Kill the bill, don’t kill us.” The plan will now go to the full Senate for a vote as early as Thursday. The Senate bill slashes the corporate tax rate and gives further tax cuts to wealthy business owners. It would also repeal a key provision of the Affordable Care Act, the requirement that most Americans have health insurance. Experts say revoking this provision, known as the individual mandate, would cause the cost of health insurance to skyrocket. We speak with Heather McGhee, president of Demos and Demos Action.

As Native American Heritage Month winds down, President Donald Trump is opening the door to new drilling and mining on land considered sacred by tribal nations. On Monday, Trump plans to travel to Utah to announce plans to shrink the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments to make way for more industrial activity on the land. The Hopi, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Pueblo of Zuni and the Ute Indian Tribe all say they will sue to stop the plan. This comes after Trump attempted to insult Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren by referring to her as “Pocahontas” during a White House ceremony honoring Navajo code talkers, Native Americans who served in the Marines during WWII and used the Navajo language in order to transmit encoded information. Warren says her family is part Cherokee. We speak with Mary Kathryn Nagle, a citizen of Cherokee Nation and a partner at Pipestem Law, P.C., a law firm dedicated to the restoration of tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction.

Donald Trump has made what could be his most controversial tweets yet — and that's saying something.
The Twitter fanatic, who is also President of the United States, hit the retweet button early Wednesday, circulating three tweets from extreme-right group “Britain First”.
The tweets, from the group's deputy leader Jayda Fransen, show unverified videos with the titles: 'Islamist mob pushes teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!', 'Muslim Destroys a Statue of Virgin Mary!', and 'Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches!'. Jayda Fransen has already been convicted of hate crimes in the UK, and is facing more charges.
British Prime Minister Theresa May is currently in Iraq, but a spokesman for Downing Street said it was "wrong" for President Trump to have retweeted Fransen. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended the tweets, saying: "Whether it's a real video, the threat is real and that is what the president is talking about."
“Britain First“ was launched in 2011 by former members of a failed nationalist political party. It’s mainly known for its flag-waving marches and publicity stunts outside mosques - all in the name of campaigning, in its own words, for “patriotic resistance” and against “the rapid growth of militant Islam.”
Many of its posts online end up reaching several million people. But its influence on British remains questionable.

New documents: Trump paid over $1 million to settle labor lawsuit
President Trump paid out more than $1 million in the late 1990's to a group of Polish workers in the country illegally who demolished the building that would eventually be replaced by Trump Tower in Manhattan, according to recently unsealed documents.
The workers in 1980 received as little as $4 per hour, and worked 12-hour shifts without gloves, hard hats or masks to demolish the Bonwit Teller building on Fifth Avenue, The New York Times reported Monday.
Trump testified that he did not remember undocumented Polish workers being on the job.
Trump paid $1.375 million to settle the case, with $500,000 going to a union benefits fund and the rest covering lawyers’ fees and expenses. The case was settled in 1998.
Details of the settlement remained secret, but last week documents were unsealed in response to a 2016 motion filed by Time Inc. and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
During his presidential campaign and since taking office, Trump has frequently lamented the loss of American jobs to immigrants and workers overseas.
In June 2016, Trump took to Twitter to brag about his record in lawsuits.

The internet is dying.
Sure, technically, the internet still works. Pull up Facebook on your phone and you will still see your second cousin’s baby pictures. But that isn’t really the internet. It’s not the open, anyone-can-build-it network of the 1990s and early 2000s, the product of technologies created over decades through government funding and academic research, the network that helped undo Microsoft’s stranglehold on the tech business and gave us upstarts like Amazon, Google, Facebook and Netflix.
Nope, that freewheeling internet has been dying a slow death — and a vote next month by the Federal Communications Commission to undo net neutrality would be the final pillow in its face.
Net neutrality is intended to prevent companies that provide internet service from offering preferential treatment to certain content over their lines. The rules prevent, for instance, AT&T from charging a fee to companies that want to stream high-definition videos to people.
Because net neutrality shelters start-ups — which can’t easily pay for fast-line access — from internet giants that can pay, the rules are just about the last bulwark against the complete corporate takeover of much of online life. When the rules go, the internet will still work, but it will look like and feel like something else altogether — a network in which business development deals, rather than innovation, determine what you experience, a network that feels much more like cable TV than the technological Wild West that gave you Napster and Netflix.

Gold dealer turned star witness details alleged bribes to senior Turkish official - Reza Zarrab
NEW YORK — A wealthy Turkish gold dealer stepped into the public eye for the first time Wednesday, testifying at a federal trial here that he paid about 50 million euros in bribes to the former economy minister of Turkey as part of a scheme to evade U.S. sanctions on Iran.
Reza Zarrab, 34, became the star witness Wednesday at what was originally meant to be his own trial. Instead, he cut a deal with the Justice Department to testify against others in the case.
Asked why he decided to flip against his alleged co-conspirator, Mehmet Hakan Atilla, a Turkish bank official, Zarrab answered, “Cooperation was the fastest way to accept responsibility and get out of jail.’’
Zarrab said the agreement with prosecutors came after a failed attempt by his American attorneys to arrange a “prisoner swap’’ between the United States and Turkey.

Republicans are rapidly pushing forward with their efforts to pass President Donald Trump’s tax plan, which would overhaul the tax code in order to shower billions of dollars in tax cuts upon the richest Americans, including Trump’s own family. On Tuesday, the Senate Budget Committee passed the Senate version of the plan, with all Republicans on the panel voting for it and all Democrats voting against. Protesters disrupted the committee hearing Tuesday with chants of “Kill the bill, don’t kill us.” The plan will now go to the full Senate for a vote as early as Thursday. The Senate bill slashes the corporate tax rate and gives further tax cuts to wealthy business owners. It would also repeal a key provision of the Affordable Care Act, the requirement that most Americans have health insurance. Experts say revoking this provision, known as the individual mandate, would cause the cost of health insurance to skyrocket. We speak with Heather McGhee, president of Demos and Demos Action.

As Native American Heritage Month winds down, President Donald Trump is opening the door to new drilling and mining on land considered sacred by tribal nations. On Monday, Trump plans to travel to Utah to announce plans to shrink the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments to make way for more industrial activity on the land. The Hopi, Navajo Nation, Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, Pueblo of Zuni and the Ute Indian Tribe all say they will sue to stop the plan. This comes after Trump attempted to insult Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren by referring to her as “Pocahontas” during a White House ceremony honoring Navajo code talkers, Native Americans who served in the Marines during WWII and used the Navajo language in order to transmit encoded information. Warren says her family is part Cherokee. We speak with Mary Kathryn Nagle, a citizen of Cherokee Nation and a partner at Pipestem Law, P.C., a law firm dedicated to the restoration of tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction.

Donald Trump has made what could be his most controversial tweets yet — and that's saying something.
The Twitter fanatic, who is also President of the United States, hit the retweet button early Wednesday, circulating three tweets from extreme-right group “Britain First”.
The tweets, from the group's deputy leader Jayda Fransen, show unverified videos with the titles: 'Islamist mob pushes teenage boy off roof and beats him to death!', 'Muslim Destroys a Statue of Virgin Mary!', and 'Muslim migrant beats up Dutch boy on crutches!'. Jayda Fransen has already been convicted of hate crimes in the UK, and is facing more charges.
British Prime Minister Theresa May is currently in Iraq, but a spokesman for Downing Street said it was "wrong" for President Trump to have retweeted Fransen. White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended the tweets, saying: "Whether it's a real video, the threat is real and that is what the president is talking about."
“Britain First“ was launched in 2011 by former members of a failed nationalist political party. It’s mainly known for its flag-waving marches and publicity stunts outside mosques - all in the name of campaigning, in its own words, for “patriotic resistance” and against “the rapid growth of militant Islam.”
Many of its posts online end up reaching several million people. But its influence on British remains questionable.

New documents: Trump paid over $1 million to settle labor lawsuit
President Trump paid out more than $1 million in the late 1990's to a group of Polish workers in the country illegally who demolished the building that would eventually be replaced by Trump Tower in Manhattan, according to recently unsealed documents.
The workers in 1980 received as little as $4 per hour, and worked 12-hour shifts without gloves, hard hats or masks to demolish the Bonwit Teller building on Fifth Avenue, The New York Times reported Monday.
Trump testified that he did not remember undocumented Polish workers being on the job.
Trump paid $1.375 million to settle the case, with $500,000 going to a union benefits fund and the rest covering lawyers’ fees and expenses. The case was settled in 1998.
Details of the settlement remained secret, but last week documents were unsealed in response to a 2016 motion filed by Time Inc. and the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.
During his presidential campaign and since taking office, Trump has frequently lamented the loss of American jobs to immigrants and workers overseas.
In June 2016, Trump took to Twitter to brag about his record in lawsuits.

The internet is dying.
Sure, technically, the internet still works. Pull up Facebook on your phone and you will still see your second cousin’s baby pictures. But that isn’t really the internet. It’s not the open, anyone-can-build-it network of the 1990s and early 2000s, the product of technologies created over decades through government funding and academic research, the network that helped undo Microsoft’s stranglehold on the tech business and gave us upstarts like Amazon, Google, Facebook and Netflix.
Nope, that freewheeling internet has been dying a slow death — and a vote next month by the Federal Communications Commission to undo net neutrality would be the final pillow in its face.
Net neutrality is intended to prevent companies that provide internet service from offering preferential treatment to certain content over their lines. The rules prevent, for instance, AT&T from charging a fee to companies that want to stream high-definition videos to people.
Because net neutrality shelters start-ups — which can’t easily pay for fast-line access — from internet giants that can pay, the rules are just about the last bulwark against the complete corporate takeover of much of online life. When the rules go, the internet will still work, but it will look like and feel like something else altogether — a network in which business development deals, rather than innovation, determine what you experience, a network that feels much more like cable TV than the technological Wild West that gave you Napster and Netflix.

NEW YORK — A wealthy Turkish gold dealer stepped into the public eye for the first time Wednesday, testifying at a federal trial here that he paid about 50 million euros in bribes to the former economy minister of Turkey as part of a scheme to evade U.S. sanctions on Iran.
Reza Zarrab, 34, became the star witness Wednesday at what was originally meant to be his own trial. Instead, he cut a deal with the Justice Department to testify against others in the case.
Asked why he decided to flip against his alleged co-conspirator, Mehmet Hakan Atilla, a Turkish bank official, Zarrab answered, “Cooperation was the fastest way to accept responsibility and get out of jail.’’
