Carbon nanotubes to be used in light bulbs

Friday 29 September 2006

US-based carbon nanotube technology firm Nano-Proprietary has announced that its subsidiary, Applied Nanotech has entered into a license agreement with Shimane Masuda Electronics (SME) to manufacture the first light bulbs based on the technology.

SME has developed a carbon nanotube electron emission based lighting device, and the deal will result in SME manufacturing carbon cold cathode products in Japan and to sell those products in Asia.

“We are pleased that SME successfully completed its pilot period and after a thorough analysis of the results decided to proceed to the commercialisation stage,” said Dr. Zvi Yaniv, CEO of Applied Nanotech.

The firms have been working together on a joint pilot line for the technology in the US since late last year. SME’s customers include Mitsubishi, Sony and Sharp.

“I am confident that this proven technology will lead us into other products in the future that will generate additional income to both companies,” said Dan Burck, CEO of Nano-Proprietary.

There is a lot of interest amongst semiconductor firms about exploring the low power potential of CMOS-based nanotube technologies. IBM, Fujitsu and Infineon are examples of firms looking at the technology.

Earlier this year On Semiconductor teamed up with Nantero to develop techniques for commercialising carbon nanotube technology in a standard CMOS fabrication process.

According to Greg Schmergel, Nantero's co-founder and CEO, the joint venture should result in the world's first production semiconductor devices using carbon nanotubes.

Nantero is developing a non-volatile random access memory device which it believes will be used as embedded memory in mobile phones and MP3 players.

Applied Nanotech is developing applications for nanotechnology in particular in the field of electron emission applications from carbon film/nanotubes, sensors and functionalised nanomaterials.

Light bulbs? I don't think so! BLUs = Back Lighting Units for LCD TV display screens, more likely!! Note 'SME’s customers include Mitsubishi, Sony and Sharp' - perhaps these companies are going into the 'light bulb' business!! VVBG.

The SEC Must Go!
And jail shorters.
