herpes prophylactic

From Websters

Main Entry: 1pro·phy·lac·tic
Pronunciation: "prO-f&-'lak-tik also "prä-
Function: adjective
Etymology: Greek prophylaktikos, from prophylassein to be on guard, from pro- before + phylassein to guard, from phylak-, phylax guard
Date: 1574
1 : guarding from or preventing disease

Check the recent PR on Cytogenix's herpes treatment. You'll see CEO Malcolm Skolnick mentions that the preparation is also being tested as a prophylactic. This has slipped by almost unnoticed, but it's big, big news.

The animal test results may soon reveal that the preparation can PREVENT transmission of herpes.

There is currently no drug anywhere even in testing that can do this. Doctors once thought that the virus wasn't contagious when no lesions were present. Now we know that isn't true. The virus can be "shed" even when the carrier is showing no symptoms.

For the millions of couples out there in which one partner has the virus and the other doesn't, condoms are the only way to effectively prevent transmission. And we all know how much fun condoms are.

Soon there may be another choice. This is one of the unmet needs of herpes sufferers the CEO was talking about. What's that worth?
