Gantor, if the shorts were trying to increase their short position it seems to me they would have done it alot more efficiently and quietly. The only reason to go for the "shock and awe" approach is to induce selling, both by new shorts and by longs (voluntarily and involuntarily). Why would they want to short more at lower levels that they induced? The only reason to do this is so they can buy/cover lower.
