Zeev, OT *** Jewish emigration

Recently I read in one of the US news magazines that more jews from Russia emigrated to Germany in 2002 than went to Israel. Jewish clergy asked German autorities to screen them, because some of the clergy define jewishness by the father, others by the mothers status. The German authorities refused, saying never again would they sort out jews.

It was either U.S. News or Newsweek.

That's what I remember and I have nothing further on the matter.
