If you look in the sticky for the USAID proposal there is a description of the processing method. Without reviewing it, and going from my memory, I believe it's some kind of vibration process where the heavier metal particles fall to the bottom and are collected. I'll have to review that again, but there is definitely no mercury involved.

The mercury process is similar to the silver/mercury filling process for teeth. Mixing mercury with the gold ore will form an amalgam as the gold sticks to and combines with the mercury. Then the amalgam is burned so the mercury evaporates and the gold remains. Definitely an antiquated, inefficient, and dangerous process.
