Obama, Clinton and Trump agree: McCain is a fighter

Prayers and well-wishes are pouring in for Sen John McCain following his brain cancer diagnosis.

“He has never shied from a fight and I know that he will face this challenge with the same extraordinary courage that has characterized his life,” Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said in a statement Wednesday night.

“John McCain is an American hero & one of the bravest fighters I’ve ever known,” tweeted former President Barack Obama. “Cancer doesn’t know what it’s up against. Give it hell, John.”

People from all over the country have been taking to social media to show their support for McCain, 80, after his office revealed that he had been diagnosed with a primary glioblastoma, or an aggressive brain tumor.

The senator underwent surgery last week to remove a blood clot above his eye — and lab tests later confirmed the presence of cancer.

“Just spoke to @SenJohnMcCain. Tough diagnosis, but even tougher man,” tweeted Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake.

“My thoughts and prayers are with Senator John McCain and his family tonight,” wrote Gov. Cuomo. “Here’s to a speedy recovery for a true American hero.”

Hillary Clinton added, “John McCain is as tough as they come. Thinking of John, Cindy, their wonderful children, & their whole family tonight.”

President Trump showed his support in a statement, saying: “Senator John McCain has always been a fighter. Melania and I send our thoughts and prayers to Senator McCain, Cindy, and their entire family. Get well soon.”

McCain’s daughter, Meghan McCain, also responded to her father’s diagnosis with a statement — saying he was remaining calm, despite the circumstances.

“My grandmother, mother, brothers, sisters and I have all endured the shock of the news, and now we live with the anxiety about what comes next,” she said. “It won’t surprise you to learn that in all this, the one of us who is most confident and calm is my father. He is the toughest person I know.

“The cruelest enemy could not break him,” she added, in reference to McCain’s five-and-a-half year stint as a POW in Vietnam.

“The aggressions of political life could not bend him. So he is meeting this challenge as he has every other. Cancer may afflict him in many ways: But it will not make him surrender. Nothing ever has.”
