staying.alive.Justin...

I'm sorry about your coworker. Sure hope he was a hell of a lot older than you are. Very sad. In the meantime, be careful.

I got the link to the PW digital camera piece from the grand lady herself. I think you'll find this interesting.

The retaining wall that does a Niagra Falls imitation holds up my parking area. <g> This house is set into a hill and is not all that far from the road. The "land" is in back. My second story bedroom window sill is on the level of the road to give you an idea of the pitch. The retaining wall is about 5' high and made of beams that look like pale railroad ties. (I should learn how to post a picture.)

Dirt has settled around the edge from years of runoff. I did not realize that this was something that needed to be cleared. Subsequently, water has gotten between the end of the pavement and the water. Thanks to the deep freezes of the winter, the wall has been pushed away from the end of the macadam.

There is a hole in the corner where Niagra Falls gushes forth from between the beams during a downpour. I have to clear out all the dirt that has collected. Then I need to get "asphalt patch" to fill in the gap between the end of the pavement and the wall bringing it up to the level of the top beam to prevent more seepage.

Very exciting.

I bought a square shovel on the way home from work at Home Depot... along with a new pair of work gloves and silicon spray... Home Depot is the only store where I don't seem to be able to stick to my list. <g>

Also took a little side trip to the grocery store there... it is the only one in the area that stocks Camay... As I headed down there, I ran into two adorable, tall, good looking teenage boys who were throwing something against a wall and ceiling... Sticky Balls. I smiled at them. They encouraged me to try it. I threw a good overhand shot with about half the power they were manifesting. Got big smiles of approval... Kept running into them as I performed my errands. They were so friendly... Nice kids... extremely easy on the eyes. Made my day.

I'm easy. wink

Back to the home improvement saga. My basement is tiny. It is only the size of the original house. The additions were put on over a crawl space, slab, and on stilts. The original part of the house is about 90 to 100 years old. The basement walls are a foot to 18" thick. Solid. There are no windows in the front as the ground is at the level of the first story floor. In a very short distance, the hill pitches down far enough so that there is a full size door opening onto the back yard.

The south part of the basement is in line with an underground stream which fortunately passes by/through the well. When the ground gets this saturated it rises and flows in the front and runs out a corner in the back. I tried the vacuum routine tonight. Sopped it up but it flowed right back. I'll keep trying every 24 hours until it stops... then I'll fine tune it. I smell dehumidifier on the shopping list. <g>

More than you wanted to know I bet.

Hope you are cool and comfortable when you read this.
Take care,
ksquared
