Here's a true story from many years ago.

My son was in the first grade and he had to go to religious instruction on Saturday mornings. It was also mandatory that one parent attend and that was me.

I was sitting in the class when I had this feeling that I left a cigarette burning in the house before I left. Panic set in and I called the house knowing pretty well that my husband wasn't home. He wasn't.

I called our teenage babysitter who lived across the street and asked her to climb in through the bathroom window and check to see if I had left a cigarette lit in the house.

From the time I called her until the time she went over to the house, my husband came home.....unbeknownst to her.

Here she was climbing in the bathroom window at my request. Had my husband had a gun and the law said he could do so, he could have shot her......no questions asked, right?

What a tragedy that would have been.
