Dental Analogy (CYDY)

A long while ago I'm sitting in a chair in my Dentist's office when he hands be a toothbrush. He tells me that this brush is superior to any brush on the market. I asked why, and be gave me a rather long answer that sounded reasonable but I can't remember the rationale.

So, I said "why don't you take it to a major toothbrush company and try to make a deal"?

He said "I did" and I asked him what happened.

Here's the short form:

He said he went to XYZ Co. and met with the CEO who was flanked on both sides by an Engineer. After about 45 minutes they asked him if he would wait outside for a short while. He did and a few minutes later he was recalled.

The CEO said "you are right, your brush is more effective than any of ours........ but we can't make a deal"..The dentist asked why and was told "we have too much of an investment in our brushes".

Depending on one's perspective that answer makes sense or doesn't make sense. Doesn't matter. What might matter is whether this analogy describes GILD today.
