On the otherhand, he is not in charge of anything, so why would the WH folks even tell him this letter arrived?

C-SPAN ran the full 90min interview and it was very interesting, (60Minutes had to cut the interview back to fit their allowed 24min time-frame). Iran's president is a sharp guy; it's just as well the Decider continue to hide from responding to his letter.
