Senators call for the LPGA to move women’s major away from Trump course

Three Democratic senators have signed a letter addressed to the executive director of the United States Golf Association asking him to reconsider hosting the 2017 U.S Women’s Open tournament at Trump National Golf Club.

In their letter, the three senators?—?Robert Casey (D-PA), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Edward Markey (D-MA)?—?highlight the LGPA’s “proud history of advancing women’s equality,” and stressed the organization’s incompatibility with Donald Trump, who bragged about sexually assaulting women on a leaked video from 2005. Since the tape was published, Trump has been accused of sexually assaulting multiple women over a period of decades, and has attacked his accusers, calling them ugly, lying, sex fiends.

“This is about more than one video: it’s about a pattern of degrading and dehumanizing women that has occurred over decades,” the senators said.

“Given the historic role that the LPGA has played in advancing the rights of women, and the severity of Mr. Trump’s words and actions over many years, we would encourage you to move the 2017 tournament to a course that isn’t associated with Mr. Trump.”

The event—one of five major LPGA tournaments held during the professional season—is played at a different U.S site each year, and is scheduled to be held at a Trump course in Bedminster, New Jersey next July.

If the USGA does opt to relocate next summer’s tournament, it would be the second time this year a marquee golf tournament was moved away from a Trump-owned property. Back in June, the PGA announced that their annual World Golf Championship would be relocated from its longtime home at Trump’s National Doral Golf Course in Miami to a new location in Mexico City for 2017.

The Grass Is Always Greener: PGA Tour Abandons Trump’s Golf Course For Mexico City

According to its official Twitter account, Trump Golf is “the most globally recognized brand in luxury golf.”

Even before launching his toxic presidential campaign, Trump’s golf courses have been at the epicenter of some of his more public feuds in recent years. Most notably, his golf resort in Scotland was beset by protests from residents [ https://thinkprogress.org/the-grass-is-always-greener-pga-tour-abandons-trumps-golf-course-for-mexico-city-6903e83790a0#.r6d90gfdz ] who didn’t appreciated Trump’s insistence on buying up pristine property and razing buildings he deemed unsightly. When Scotland sought to build a wind farm off the coast to generate power, Trump fought tooth and nail to stop it, for fear it would interrupt the sightlines from his course.
