Iraq war vet Democratic Rep. Gallego: Trump 'mentally unstable'

Elected officials are finally starting to name what has been plainly obvious, but perhaps politically off-limits, for more than a year: Donald Trump is "mentally unstable" and "unfit" to be president. President Obama made the assertion at a Tuesday press conference, the same day that Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego of Arizona, an Iraq War veteran, told CNN's Carol Costello that he believes Donald Trump is not mentally well.

Gallego: This man is unstable, he is unfit to be a presidential candidate --

Costello: You think he's unstable?

Gallego: I absolutely believe he's unstable.

Costello: Like mentally unstable?

Gallego: I do believe he's mentally unstable. I do believe he's very dangerous.

Costello: Why?

Gellego: Who in their right mind would attack a Gold Star family? And not only that, once they've actually done that, then turn around and double down and then accuse a gold star mother of not being able to speak because of some weird religious bias that he believes that she had. This is not Normal.

Gallego went on to say that it's time for GOP leaders like Paul Ryan and John McCain to repudiate Trump. Continuing to support Trump's candidacy, even if you denounce his actions, only encourages his behavior.

Costello: Here is the thing. Senator John McCain came out with a very strong letter denouncing Donald Trump's comments -- about the Kahn family...

Gallego: Right, but still endorsing him.

Costello: But Senator McCain would say, you know what, the voters have spoken. Who am I as a politician to disavow what they want?

Gallego: But it's important to be a leader sometimes and not a politician. I think senator McCain is missing that point. So is speaker Ryan. This man is unstable, he is unfit to be a presidential candidate --

Costello: You think he's unstable?

Gallego: I absolutely believe he's unstable.

Costello: Like mentally unstable?

Gallego: I do believe he's mentally unstable. I do believe he's very dangerous.

Costello: Why?

Gellego: Who in their right mind would attack a Gold Star family? And not only that, once they've actually done that, then turn around and double down and then accuse a gold star mother of not being able to speak because of some weird religious bias that he believes that she had. This is not Normal. For politicians like Paul Ryan and senator McCain to basically continue to endorse this person, you're only encouraging that behavior and, not only that, you're encouraging other people in society—a lot of people that are supporting Trump—to actually support this viewpoint.
