If I may say so - Duke was quoting verbatim what appeared in a Press Release earlier that day.
Did you not see or read the PR yourself?
Of course the company didn't create "the" USB per se!
If you have read the PR then you would know and appreciate the implied term of reference in relation to the word "create" and how it applies to a USB in conjunction with swiping your finger etc etc...
