I agree with almost everything you say except the next two.
I don't believe that the Preakness will(though it will figure into my point) but it is the Belmont that breaks horses.
It is a cruel race that has ended many a legitimate chance at a Triple Crown.
It beat(along with some extenuating circumstances) the best horse I have ever seen in my life...Spectacular Bid.
