Driving in NYC... lots of fun at about 3:00 in the morning cruising the avenues. If you time it right you can make all the lights at about 40 mph... the Central Park circle is another wonderful night time drive.
I stuck primarily with subways. I know that system inside and out. Actually used to enjoy the variety in the faces... like being at the human zoo... someone from every nook and cranny of the planet. Same with Central Park... colorful festival of humanity... relaxed and happy... New Yorkers out to play... live entertainment every where. I'm seeing it as I type. Just mentally taking the walk uptown past Tavern on the Green cutting across Sheep Meadow to the roller skaters with their boom boxes past the band shell and on to Bethesda Fountain by the Boat Pond.
In the early 70s before they cleaned it up and the elaborate tile ceilings of the concourse under 72nd street disappeared... I used to hang out in the fountain area... cats would stroll by selling ice cold Bud and joints for a dollar a piece. Street musicians would perform. Great place to sit wearing your Bausch and Lomb aviator sunglasses and observe without making eye contact.
Across the way is the Ramble... a thickly wooded area. In the center of it, you cannot see the sky line nor can you hear the traffic but you can still feel the vibration that is constant in the city. The earth is alive with the energy emanating from the underground and pounding in the streets.
