the requirement varies..you need a margin account to short, but the requirement is up to the broker. Some stocks require 50% margin, some 100%, and others 10%. It really depends on what the broker feels is their risk. And it doesn't apply only to stocks under $5

i cant' short under $5 cause my broker won't allow it.
