As I was growing up, my father told me that the older I got and the more money I made, my ideals would probably swing dramatically to the right and then settle somewhere in the middle.... i.e.

yes, I've experienced that also. And believe it or not, I'm more conservative now than when I was younger. I took a test once and it showed me near the middle but slightly to the left of middle.

But, my point is, I would rather discuss things with those who are willing to think independently rather than along party lines.

I totally agree.

I would like to see discussions more along the lines of: what are the solutions to the situation we are in now, instead of us all getting caught up in the trap of "how did we get here"

I somewhat agree with that. I think looking at history is important so we don't have to re-learn the same lessons over and over again. Just like in business, you look at works well and do more of it... look at what isn't working and figure out how to fix it.
