Despite heightened social and political tensions, we expect the ruling coalition, led by the president, Mahamadou Issoufou, to remain in power in the 2016 national elections. Stretched resources, porous borders and weak government control mean that the biggest threat to political stability will come from the growing influence of Islamist terrorist groups in the subregion. Economic growth, supported by robust aid inflows, will average around 5.3% a year in 2016-17.
