Let's talk MSFT and its lack of a 64bit OS for desktops now and in the near future.

Well, I don't know about you, but I consider Q4 to be the near future when MSFT's 64-bit version of WindowsXP for Athlon64 desktops is due to launch & be available in shrink wrap.

Now, I know last week you were saying that it means nothing to you if you can't buy it right now. However, you did say 'near future' in your post.

I note that Apple does not even have a release date for the future fully 64-bit version of OSX.

As for Panther, it will require applications to be recompiled for 64 bit when they are modified.

Just like PAE, which was available from Microsoft and Intel since - the Pentium II! Panther only permits manipulation of larger data areas, not running 64-bit code, just like PAE.

P.S.: On the Linux front, 64-bit Linux for the desktop are available right now. You can purchase an Opteron workstation and get full 64-bit Linux. Out of the three major OSs, it looks like Apple is dead last in moving to 64-bit.
