Yes, it was after the 1995 massacre in Srebrenica. He was part of IFOR, and later SFOR for a time. Another nephew was deployed for SFOR and stayed a year or two. All 3 of my nephews came home safe thank God and are now out of the Army. One of them has continuing serious health problems, related to exposure to something toxic, probably depleted uranium shell residue, during Operation Desert Storm.
My own son Ross, is currently a Lieutenant in the AF, and his commitment will be for at least 6 more years. These things add importance to Presidential elections for me, and millions of other parents... not sure how many pay attention.
That is a good article from the NY Times. What we should be proud of is the fact that although the NATO/UN action began with a tragedy, after the deployment of 60,000 troops, the Serb bullies/cowards/murderers were no longer an issue.
