Make no mistake, it needs to be absolutely crystal clear MSFT has partnered with Sphere because they believe Sphere can help MSFT grow Azure. Not the other way around. MSFT is on record saying that they are partners because Sphere can do things they cannot.
It involves Glassware, Snapcloud, Exosphere along with other products that can and will help Azure grow. To separate the products and say we invested for one but not the others is a mistake. Remember, the whole is greater than the sum of the parts in this situation. It takes all of their products to create the competitive advantage of being able to offer the hybrid cloud at a cost and with the simplicity yet to be matched in the market. The cadre of products create synergies that stand alone products wouldn't have. Thats the big picture. Glassware will have its day in the sun. I believe that. But its the combined product line that I think may have interested MSFT rather than Glassware alone. Companies can piece meal different hardware and software and have done so for a long time. When you can combine the tools that work perfect together, are easy to use and reduce Opex (and by the sounds of things Capex, though not 100% sure about that as I haven't done much research on it) it makes for a nice marriage. Time will tell.
