If the leading metrics are performance/$ and performance/watt, Intel can easily fix the former by lowering prices. In fact, you may have already noticed the leaked price sheets that showed Pentium 4 products at sub-$100 price points and even Pentium D products in the $100-200 price range. These price moves will supposedly happen at the same time as the Conroe launch. What does AMD have that can compete with that kind of performance/$? Will they be willing to lower Athlon 64 to sub-$100 and Athlon X2 to sub-$200 to compete with these, while Conroe takes the $200-500 range?

If not, then AMD will continue to be inferior to Intel in performance/$ in the case of Pentium 4 and Pentium D, and in performance/$ and performance/Watt in the case of Core 2.
