I think as a long term investment, shares are probably fairly valued at 17 times earnings, and now could be a good time to start layering in while the dividend is at one of the highest levels it's been at over the last decade.

Watching traffic trends will be instrumental in the short term, however, and more patient investors may want to wait until things start normalizing before riding the rails with UNP.

Continued large, frequent declines could possibly change the trajectory of the company's growth story.
