Keep in mind that U.S. troops were involved in WW I for only about 17 months (June 26,1917, US troops arrived in France-November 11, 1918, Armistice goes into effect). My point is that we were only tangentially involved in WW I. Actually the Spanish Influenza that our troops brought over to Europe from Ft. Riley, Kansas and then brought back in the late summer of 1918 killed more Americans than WW I (about 675,000).

I don't think the gold-backed dollar was an issue in WW I inasmuch as we did not have to go into serious deficit spending to finanace that war. My guess is that Germany's war reparations had to be paid in gold though. (Would you have taken Kaiser Wilhelm's DMs?)
