Sonic probably pre-dates McDonalds. It has the advantage that it brings its garbage grub to you. In doing so, it provides varying degrees of cotton candy for the imagination (most commonly, of males). My guess is that it would have had greater success if it had used the modern secret of business success ... and lobbied against female drivers.
