Current Technologies, LLC is a privately held company based in Germantown, Maryland that is focused on building and delivering innovative broadband power line communications (PLC) equipment and networks based on its own proprietary technology. Founded in July 2000, Current is an industry leader in developing PLC access solutions. Current now employs 50+ professionals and over the last two years has developed a complete broadband access solution. Current's equipment is overlaid on the electric distribution network and is deployed by the utility's existing personnel (linemen) and contractors. Current's PLC network, once deployed, will also enable utilities to capitalize on their existing network infrastructure by offering new, enhanced power distribution services such as automated meter reading, automatic outage detection, and demand side management.

Current has developed its proprietary PLC solution, resolving transmission issues over both low voltage and medium voltage electric distribution lines. Current is one of the first companies to announce the deployment of a proprietary, safe, commercially viable transformer-bypass solution that can transform an electric distribution network into a broadband communications platform. Current has developed a PLC system that is compatible with the HomePlug® power line modem standard. The Current Technologies™ PLC system is capable of providing multi-megabit speeds for residential and commercial Internet access users and can support VoIP, gaming, and digital quality video streaming. PLC is "always on" at every outlet in the home or business without the need for re-wiring.

Current has recently announced initial deployments with two investor-owned utilities, Pepco and Cinergy, after having conducted limited technical trials with these utilities. Current is deploying its first generation, commercial grade PLC systems in portions of Pepco and Cinergy territories and preparing for large-scale manufacturing and commercial deployment of its proprietary PLC equipment. Current has significant intellectual property, including patent applications, in all areas of PLC, including low and medium voltage coupling techniques, data transmission equipment and methods, transformer bypass, software, network architecture, and wireless integration.
