There is already some info in Opteron presentations and I found that Opteron memory controller supports Registered or Unbuffered (page 3 of the following link):

I suppose Athlon 64 also supports both memory types but I am not sure to what extent It depends on the motherboard manufacturer. We'll know about that shortly if SK8N announcement is not delayed. After all It doesn't make such a big difference. I'm sorry but it was my confusion that Registered memory was much more expensive than the regular.

My point was a cheaper and effective dual system which can succesfully counter improved Prescot hyperthreading as well as the drawbacks which single Opteron or Athlon 64 will experience running Hyperthreaded software till the time there is enough native software for AMD64.
Finally, I doubt It's possible that Opteron's price will drop substantially because of its huge die size.
