<the metals moving in lock-step during the 70's as well (Gold, copper, zinc)>

I thought only gold (but not other metals) spiked in 70s - there was no general rally in commodities at that time. That would be expected during economic slowdown - industrial metals fall, and if there is some uncertainty/panic - gold rises.
