From a fundamental point of view today's positive opinion given by the EMEA is a watershed event.
Over the last 10 years GTC has developed transgenic goats to produce recombinant proteins for at least 12 different drugs, most of them at the request of other companies. With the exception of Merrimack, all of these companies put further development (in particular clinical development) on hold for the simple reason that they wanted a clear sign that the transgenic technology would not be blocked by the regulating authorities for being transgenic as such.
Today, the EMEA indicated unambiguously that there is no reason to stop developing this production platform as a completely new platform for the expression of recombinant proteins. This includes the development of difficult-to-express proteins, which cannot be expressed by any other existing technology, and many proteins that can only be derived from human blood with all the limitations and health risks this brings about.
From today, GTC’s management will have to work 48 hours a day to respond to requests for new collaborations and the reactivation of existing ones. Big Pharma will be queuing up to ask for a single hour of Cox's attention and analysts will have to talk to the number 17 in line.
This isn't the same company anymore.
