The vote via questionnaire merely informs the Chief and councils decision, it doesn't determine it. There won't be a referendum on the question of whether to write a letter of support due to the cost which is estimated at 25K. A referendum might be required to actually build though, so if SLNX does make this application with support and it progresses through the process, they might need one further down the road or they could build on land the tribe owns, but which is not categorized as tribal land.
When I first read the newsletter article about the meeting, it said more voted for than against. I think the brake down was something like 17 for to 8 against. Some responding to the questionnaire must have skipped the question. When I read it again, that line had been omitted. Did anyone else have that experience?
My speculative take is that the Mi'kmaq Dawn Works offer is not as good as ours, so the Chief and Council don't want to favor them. The SLNX offer is still under negotiation and they want competitive pressure to be a factor of that negotiation. And so, it is best for them to say we won't support either at this point in time.
