Calbuco volcano's surprise eruption alarms Chileans

A huge cloud of ash spewed from Chile's Calbuco volcano on Wednesday (April 22) as it erupted for the first time in 40 years.

Emergency services declared a red alert and thousands of people evacuated the immediate area as a precaution.

Calbuco is near the cities of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt .. around one thousand kilometers south of Chile's capital Santiago.

Petrol stations in the region were swamped with motorists waiting in line to fill up their tanks.

The Calbuco volcano erupted Wednesday for the first time in over 40 years, billowing a huge ash cloud over a sparsely populated, mountainous area in southern Chile. After 40 years of silence, Southern Chiles Calbuco Volcano suddenly (and quite unexpectedly) erupted.

Following several days of Pacific plate unrest, multiple 6.0M+ earthquakes around the whole of the West Pacific, and after seeing deep earthquakes in the Asthenoshpere [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asthenosphere ] below Chile / Peru, now this large unexpected eruption occurs in far South America.

Chile is now under several warnings and advisories, evacuations have been ordered in surrounding areas, and word that other eruptions much further North in Peru are rumored to be on high alert.

This sudden blast today (April 22 2015) caught many people off guard, however if people had been paying attention, this activity would have been no surprise, and possibly this volcano could have been being monitored (IF people were to pay attention ahead of time that is to say).

4/23/2015 -- AMAZING Night Eruption of Calbuco Volcano in Chile -- Lava, Ash, and Lightning

New webcam video has emerged from Chile observing the Calbuco Volcano eruption during overnight hours.

A massive fountain of lava erupted from Calbuco during the overnight hours, producing additional (ongoing) clouds of ash, and thousands of lightning strikes.

Ash fallout now being reported to be falling in Argentina - causing closures of airports and emergency orders in the neighboring country to the East.

Thousands of people have been evacuated under emergency orders from the Chilean government due to this large unexpected eruption.

4/18/2015 -- Breathtaking sunrise eruption in Japan -- Lava, Lightning, and Lavender skies

Amazing sunrise eruption - 5am April 18, 2015 - at Sakurajima volcano located in Southern Japan.

Activity is picking up in the West Pacific, be on watch for a possible larger earthquake near Japan in the near term (next 2-4 days) .

The webcams which monitor this volcano are maintained by the University of Tokyo, daytime quality is much higher resolution , the webcam is not "night vision" but still captures the massive nature of these blasts.

This fresh blast again covers the mountainside in a new layer of lava, also sending out impressive flashes of static discharge lightning.

This new volcanic activity comes on the heels of a deep earthquake just North of Japan near Kamchatka Russia.

Studies (and tests in the field) have been done which prove Asthenosphere movement (deep below the plate) causes shallow movement upon the plate above.

When the deep movement occurs, it displaces a larger region above the epicenter, the magma chambers located between the Asthenosphere, and the crust are also displaced, which then produces earthquake + volcano activity.
