Re: Remind me, when was, according to you, a good time to sell INTC?
I announced two times in the last 24 months where I sold a substantial amount of my holdings. One was shortly after the Prescott launch in 2004, and the other was early in 2005 when Opteron was gaining traction, and NGMA had still not been announced. You might be able to find these posts of mine using the iHub advanced search engine. Ever since late 2005, I've been more bullish, but the street has turned more bearish. It's a bit depressing, but I see it as a sign that things are bottoming out.
Re: But this time, Intel is selling CPUs in the $30s, boxed retail with fan, quantity of 1!
Right, the famous Celeron 310 as found on Newegg.com, right? You do realize that this part is so old that Intel does not show it on its price list? That means these parts are most likely some of the inventory that Intel is offloading at low prices, even though the part has already been EOL'ed.
As far as Intel's active product list, the lowest priced Celeron is the 331/336 series at $54, which Newegg is selling for $55 and $58, respectively. That should tell you that Intel is not discounting their prices any further than their advertised price list.

Re: I have never seen Intel this desperate. Also, Intel is selling some 300mm^2 of silicon + complicated multichip packaging for $126, retail.
If you need to exaggerate on everything to get your point across, then something is seriously wrong with your analysis.
First, Smithfield is not a 300mm^2 die. According to numerous sources on the web, it's closer to 206mm^2.

Second, the point of this product is to start generating demand for low cost dual core products in order for Intel to meet their ramp goals for the year. This pricing has also been factored into their current Q2 guidance, so it should not lower earnings more than has already been announced.
And finally, the Smithfield 805 will soon be replaced with the Presler 925, which will be much cheaper to manufacture, and come with greater performance.

Re: Sounds like a recipe for another dip in ASPs, gross margins, dollar revenue.
Only if you ignore the fact that your objections are either gross exaggerations, or already built into Intel's original guidance.
