I think it was just because it attracted a lot of buzz and speculation at that time.

Another possibility is that the people who did the hit piece saw that there was some buzz and momentum, and helped create the rally (how? no clue) and then short-sold it at the peak before they published the hit piece. I think both of those are possible.
