Retired family physician Dr. Tony Benchina was diagnosed with lung cancer in 2012. Once active and energetic, Tony endured surgeries, proceduresand a variety of drug therapies that left him so weak and ill that his wife had to take him to his medical appointments in a wheelchair. Enduring hepatitis, attacks on his autoimmune system and a resurgence of the cancer, Tony lost a year of his life to lung cancer. However, he credits his oncologist, Dr. Scott Antonia of Moffitt Cancer Center, for his meticulous care and introduction to what he refers to as “laser-type” personalized gene therapy. Tony’s outlook is positive. He’s moved from the wheelchair and back into the gym. He’s also back in the kitchen where he loves to cook Sunday dinner. When asked what he tells other lung cancer patients, he smiles and says, "Be more optimistic than the statistics."
