OT What? A gold bug and you've never heard of Dahlonega? Was a US mint there at one time. It's famous for the GA gold rush. Dahlonega is Cherokee for yellow money. I had never been there before myself. It's certainly up there in the mountains. About 35 miles from the TN, NC, GA border. What I remember of it is twisty two lane roads with big drop offs. I keep looking for a big flat area figuring you couldn't build a store on the side of a mountain. I finally gave up and asked directions. <g> Pulling into the parking lot, I noticed off to the side it dropped off and there was a billboard saying to see the gold mine. I asked them, what's this about a gold mine .... Oh, the stores built on top of one. I thought they were pulling my leg. <g>

They actually started it back up (before the store was built) in the early 80's briefly. Something about the type of ore is real expensive to extract the gold from so it's not profitable. But you can tour the mine and pan for gold. Put Dahlonega in google and you'll bring up a bunch sites. This one looks like a good starting point, http://www.dahlonega.org/ The other thing I remember is the mountain streams. So get your gold pan and take your fishing rod, and you can do both at the same time. :)
